Lindsey Risker started her career in facilities management at age 17 and joined Anabas in 2013 as a Helpdesk Coordinator. Since then, she has progressed through a number of roles, developing her knowledge of facilities management and gaining a broader understanding of how the business operates.
Today, Lindsey is Head of Business Support, helping to lead a centralised function that supports Anabas clients and onsite teams.
We caught up with Lindsey to talk about her career journey, the role of the Helpdesk, how technology has changed the way the team works, the challenges of a busy support function and what excites her about the future of FM.
I joined Anabas in 2013 as a Helpdesk Coordinator. I had previously worked within facilities management, so I had good knowledge of the industry and was able to progress within the business.
I’ve learnt a lot along the way and now have a better understanding of how the business is run. I’ve also become more customer-focused and always try to put myself in the client’s shoes.
Business Support is a centralised function that supports our clients and teams onsite. We’re contactable via email, phone and WhatsApp 24/7. We manage our CAFM system and ensure that all jobs are managed from start to finish.
We also schedule the mobile teams to ensure that sites have the cover and support needed to deliver the services required on our client sites.
I always like to say that if the Business Support team is unable to help, we can point you in the direction of who can.
I would say the Helpdesk winning the Team of the Year award. It was a testament to the hard work we all put in and how passionate the team is about seeing Anabas succeed.
Becoming more involved with the Engineering and Mobilisation department and learning more about that element of the business has been key to me.
We manage and schedule a lot of these services, so it’s really beneficial to me and the team that we have a good understanding of them.
The Helpdesk is often the client’s first point of contact for any issues onsite, so the Helpdesk team’s role is very important.
A key priority is ensuring that we provide exceptional customer service. This includes being professional and friendly on the phone and via email, but also making sure we go back to clients and provide updates so they know that the query is being dealt with.
I’m fortunate that a lot of my team have been with Anabas for many years, so they are brilliant advocates of the business.
They also aim to drive others to work in line with our values, processes and procedures.
Massively.
We brought in a system a couple of years ago which enables us to collaborate better, especially since working from home became more of the norm. This enables us to provide a more efficient service even though we are not always in the same room together.
Technology has changed the way people communicate.
Before the Covid-19 pandemic, we used to receive a lot of calls because people were more office-based. Now working from home is more common, people tend to email or message more.
We have brought in systems that enable us to integrate with things such as WhatsApp, so clients and staff can contact us on the go.
Seeing what some AI functions can do to automate certain processes is quite exciting to me. I know it will free up time for the team to really zone in on ensuring we deliver the best customer service possible and being more personable with our clients and staff onsite.
How busy we are. We support many clients, so we have to juggle and prioritise a lot. The Helpdesk is the one-stop shop for all questions and queries.
We get asked a lot of random things, and there are times when we don’t know the answer, but we will always try to help and support as best we can.
Being more strategic, looking into the future and foreseeing what’s next and planning for it. I’m used to dealing with and solving problems as they happen, so learning to look further ahead has been an important part of my development.
Reactive issues. It can go from zero to one hundred in an instant.
Listen, communicate effectively and work hard. Utilise the people and teams around you for support and try to follow the processes and procedures that are in place. They are there for a reason.
It’s great, and no day is the same. Yes, it can be challenging at times, but the people, the culture and, most importantly, working alongside my team have been the highlight for me over the years.
Lindsey’s journey at Anabas reflects the opportunities that can come from developing your skills, taking on new responsibilities and building experience across different areas of facilities management.
